๐ง๐ฟ Toledo District
THE DEEP SOUTH
OF BELIZE
Toledo is Belize's southernmost district โ the most culturally rich, the most ecologically diverse, and the most authentic corner of the country. Where Maya temples rise from the jungle, Garifuna drums echo from the coast, East Indian spices fill the air, and the Caribbean Sea meets the Maya Mountains.

THE PUNTA GORDA WELCOME COIN SIGN
Iconic Landmark ยท Town Entrance ยท Toledo District
One of the most photographed landmarks in all of Belize โ the giant coin-shaped welcome sign at the entrance to Punta Gorda town. The sign features the faces of people representing the diverse communities of Toledo โ Maya, Garifuna, East Indian, Kriol, and Mestizo โ painted in vivid colour against a warm background, with "Welcome to Punta Gorda, Toledo District" proudly displayed.
It stands as a powerful symbol of what makes PG special: this is a town where multiple cultures coexist beautifully. Every visitor who arrives on the Southern Highway sees this sign first โ it tells you exactly what PG is before you even enter the town.

THE PUNTA GORDA CLOCK TOWER
Town Centre Landmark ยท Historic ยท Punta Gorda
Standing in the heart of Punta Gorda town centre, the famous Clock Tower is the meeting point of PG. Painted in vibrant blues and decorated with Belizean imagery โ including the iconic toucan โ it has marked time in the town for decades. Locals arrange to meet "by the clock tower" the same way Belize City people say "by Swing Bridge."
The clock tower sits near the Fisherman's Pier, where you can watch boats depart for the Southern Cayes and Guatemala at sunrise. It is surrounded by the market, food vendors, and the daily rhythm of PG life.
History of Toledo
๐๏ธ
Ancient Maya โ 10,000 Years
Toledo has been inhabited by the Maya people for at least 10,000 years. Ancient cities like Lubaantun (Place of Fallen Stones) and Nim Li Punit (Big Hat) were major ceremonial and trade centres. The Maya of Toledo developed cacao cultivation โ making Toledo the chocolate capital of Belize to this day.
๐ฅ
Garifuna Arrival โ 1823
The Garifuna arrived on Toledo's coast in 1823, founding Punta Gorda (which they call Peini) and the village of Barranco โ birthplace of both Andy Palacio and Paul Nabor. They brought their drums, their language, and their fishing culture to the southern coast.
๐ช
East Indian Indenture โ 1844
East Indian indentured workers arrived in Toledo in 1844 to work sugar estates. They settled Forest Home, Indian Creek, and surrounding villages โ bringing curry, Diwali, and Bhojpuri songs that still echo in Toledo today.
๐ง๏ธ
The Wettest District
Toledo receives more rainfall than any other district in Belize โ sometimes over 160 inches per year. This makes it the most fertile and lush region in the country. The Columbia River Forest Reserve and the Maya Mountains backdrop PG with some of the most pristine rainforest in Central America.
