CAYO โ€”
JUNGLE HEART
Cayo District is the adventure capital of Belize โ€” the largest district, home to the capital city Belmopan, the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, the greatest Maya ruins, the deepest caves, and the most spectacular jungle rivers. Where the Maya Mountains meet the Mopan River, Cayo has it all.
Iconic Landmarks
๐Ÿ›๏ธ
Xunantunich โ€” Stone Maiden
"Stone Maiden" in Mopan Maya โ€” named for the ghost of a woman said to haunt the ruins. El Castillo pyramid stands 130 feet tall, overlooking the Mopan River and the mountains of Guatemala. It features an enormous stucco frieze depicting Maya cosmology. You reach it by a hand-cranked river ferry โ€” one of the most memorable approaches to any ruin in the world.
๐Ÿฐ
Caracol โ€” The Largest Maya City
Deep in the Chiquibul Forest, Caracol was the largest Maya city in Belize โ€” at its height home to over 150,000 people, larger than ancient Rome. Caana (Sky Palace) pyramid rises 141 feet and remains the tallest man-made structure in Belize. Caracol defeated the great city of Tikal in 562 AD.
๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ
ATM Cave โ€” Actun Tunichil Muknal
Rated one of the top 10 caves in the world by National Geographic. You swim into the cave, wade through underground rivers, and enter chambers filled with Maya ceremonial artefacts and human remains exactly where they were placed over 1,000 years ago. The Crystal Maiden โ€” the calcified skeleton of a sacrificed young woman โ€” is the most haunting sight in Belize.
๐ŸŒŠ
San Ignacio Market & Burns Avenue
The bustling Saturday market in San Ignacio is the heartbeat of western Belize โ€” farmers, vendors, and visitors from across Cayo and Guatemala fill the streets with produce, crafts, food, and conversation. Burns Avenue is lined with restaurants, guest houses, and shops that give San Ignacio its unique frontier energy.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ
Belmopan โ€” The Capital
Built after Hurricane Hattie destroyed Belize City in 1961, Belmopan became the new capital of Belize in 1970. It is one of the smallest capital cities in the world โ€” a planned city set in the Cayo countryside. Home to government ministries, the University of Belize, and a growing urban population.
