RT. HON. GEORGE CADLE PRICE
Father of the Nation Β· First Prime Minister of Belize
1919β2011 Β· George Price Day: January 15
Born on January 15, 1919 in Belize City, George Cadle Price was the most consequential figure in Belizean history. The son of a Mestizo father and a Kriol-Maya mother, he grew up in a humble household and studied for the priesthood before returning to Belize to serve his people in a different way β through politics.
In 1950, Price co-founded the People's United Party (PUP) and ignited the independence movement. He became the undisputed leader of a nation-in-waiting, organizing workers, farmers, and the poor under one vision: a free, independent Belize.
On September 21, 1981, that vision became reality. Belize became an independent nation, and George Price became its first Prime Minister. He served multiple terms and remained in public life until old age. He was known for walking barefoot through the streets of Belize City, knowing every citizen by name, and living simply despite holding the highest office in the land.
George Price died on September 19, 2011, at 92 years old. His funeral was attended by tens of thousands of Belizeans. He was buried at Independence Park in Belize City β the same place where he declared independence 30 years before.

PHILIP STANLEY WILBERFORCE GOLDSON
Independence Advocate Β· Journalist Β· Patriot Β· National Hero
1923β2001 Β· National Heroes & Benefactors Day: March 9
Born in 1923 in Belize City, Philip Goldson was a fearless journalist, editor, and nationalist who dedicated his life to Belizean independence. He was the founding editor of The Belize Billboard β one of Belize's most important early newspapers β and used his pen as a weapon against colonial rule.
In 1950, Goldson co-founded the People's Committee alongside George Price, which soon became the PUP. His vocal opposition to the colonial government led to his imprisonment in 1950 β he served time rather than silence his convictions. He was charged with sedition for publishing articles demanding Belizean self-governance.
Goldson later broke with Price and founded the National Independence Party (NIP), which eventually became the United Democratic Party (UDP). Despite being in opposition, his contribution to independence was never questioned. He served as a member of the National Assembly for decades and remained a towering figure of Belizean political life.
The Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City bears his name β ensuring that every person who arrives in Belize is greeted by the legacy of this great patriot.

BARON HENRY EDWARD ERNEST VICTOR BLISS
The Nation's Greatest Benefactor
1869β1926 Β· Baron Bliss Day: March 9
Baron Henry Edward Bliss was an English nobleman and passionate fisherman who sailed to Belize in 1926 aboard his yacht, the Sea King. He never set foot on Belizean soil β he was too ill to leave his boat β but he spent several months anchored in Belize City harbour, watching the city from the water and falling deeply in love with the country and its people.
When he died on March 9, 1926, Baron Bliss left his entire fortune β approximately Β£2 million at the time β to the people of Belize. His will specified that the money be used for the benefit of Belizeans, and it funded the construction of hospitals, schools, libraries, the Bliss Institute (now the Museum of Belize), the Bliss School of Nursing, public markets, and infrastructure across the country.
His generosity transformed Belize. For a man who never walked on Belizean ground, his footprint on this nation is immeasurable. He is buried in a seaside tomb near the Baron Bliss Lighthouse on the Belize City waterfront β a lighthouse that still guides ships into harbour today.

LEIGH ALBERT RICHARDSON
Founding Father Β· Nationalist Β· Voice of the People
1914β1963
Leigh Richardson was one of the most important but least celebrated founding fathers of Belize. A brilliant orator and labour organizer, he co-founded the People's Committee in 1950 alongside George Price and Philip Goldson β the committee that sparked the independence movement.
Richardson was a trade union leader who fought for the rights of working-class Belizeans at a time when colonial authorities had all the power. His ability to move crowds with his words made him one of the most powerful voices for change in the country's history. He helped awaken a nation's consciousness and gave ordinary Belizeans the courage to demand their freedom.

ANTONIO SOBERANIS GΓMEZ
Labour Revolutionary Β· Pioneer of Workers' Rights
1897β1975
Antonio Soberanis was the father of the Belizean labour movement. In the 1930s, during the height of the Great Depression, he organized Belizean workers β labourers, mahogany cutters, and the unemployed poor β into the Labour and Unemployed Association. He held mass meetings that drew thousands and fearlessly confronted the colonial establishment.
His activism was so threatening to the colonial government that he was exiled from Belize twice. But he kept coming back. He planted the seeds of political consciousness that would later bloom into the independence movement. Without Soberanis, there is no Price. Without Price, there is no independence.
